These
specimens were collected in the 70's from the oil shales in
Craigsleith, Collingwood, Ontario. This is a very old famous location
and is now a park. It was once a producing oil shale site and is now
protected however fossil hunting is allowed.
Most of the fossils found
are layers and layers of shed shells as they grow. These collect on the
floor by the hundreds in all sizes. Since the trilobite has many
sections some unusual fossils are found. But they are all just sections
of the trilobite exoskeleton. Rarely an intact specimen is found, but
mostly it is hundreds of tail and other sections piled on top of each
other in layers.
Below is a chart of the
various pieces of a trilobite exoskeleton. The Glabella has been the
cause of many a "mystery" fossil among amateur collectors.
