In The Blackness Of Night

In the blackness of night when dark shadows
Are all and moonlight and starlight are hid
By the clouds, all sound is unknown, echoes
Of the deep well hiding fears that are slid
To our dreams underground. Grey is the glow
Of the twilight and dawn till the sun's rid
The world of this half-lighted mist. We owe
Nothing to twilight and naught to dawn, bid
We much more to moonlight in songs and slow
Jigs. The moon, when `tis full, does forbid
Dark at all, for rarely does sun's light so
Cleanly shine. Its light's are a sword amid
A night's sheath drawn to defend all below.
Sing praises for this good silvered shadow.
