Allusion and Metaphor
I do not wish to match your eyes to stars
Nor springtime's heady glowing to your smile,
I'll not try and say which bud beguiles
Nor which season shall be your best partner.
No substituting muses, nor river,
Nor Mount of Olympus shall be named
And never once shall I liken famed
Dawn, twilight, noon nor moon's silver sliver
To your countenance, your form or your heart.
Allusion and metaphor lend not their
Power well enough to give your most dear
Truth its due, so of them I'll use no part.
Let this simple and better thing be said
"By your beauty in all ways am I lead"
