Construction Project C01 One Third Scale Model Medieval Castle at Opportunity Village Magical Forest |
Begun October 24th, 1999 Completed by Nov. 19 1999 The Isle of Standauffish contracted to build a castle on a large space provide for us at the Magical Forest on 6300 West Oakey, an Opportunity Village production. The building is a one third scale reproduction of a medieval Castle complete with stained glass windows and a gargoyle. Though it is to scale, it is never the less a permanent structure complete with cement foundation and electricity. Photo of finished Castle goes here The actual design and construction was undertaken by Camillo Favaro of Mediterraneus and Ron Schmidt of House of Shalott, with assistance from Mike McAlpine from House of Black Arrow. Except for some cement, stucco wire, tar paper, and decoration items, the castle is built from recycled materials from construction sites resulting in the total cash expenditure for the project being just over $400.00. The finishing touch on Castle Standauffish was a layer of grey stucco which was donated by Ford Contracting, a Las Vegas stucco company who has done work for Opportunity Village in the past. The labour on the stucco, which was literally done at the last minute was provided by three employees of Ford Contracting; Tom Hynes, Jim Davis and Pat Lomax. The Isle thanks this company for its kind assistance in this project.
Phase Two To be Started September 2000 Phase two of the Castle project is to finish the detailing of the block and brick work on the castle as well as add some more period decorations. We plan to use z-brick for the lower stone work, then faux paint the rest to look like stone work. Before this can be done the stucco work needs touch up and another coat of weather proof paint. Also the area around the Castle is slated for a one
third scale Tudor Village, figurines and other items starting with a grist
mill in the empty space behind the castle. For this project we will need
as many volunteers as wish to participate,
