September 23, 2009 1. Sandstorm has
covered the world famous Sydney Opera House,
September 23, 2009. (REUTERS / Tim Wimborne) A huge dust storm
swept over eastern Australia, and covered Sydney on
Wednesday 23 September 2009. Storm swept an
area 500 km. wide and 1000 km. in length.
Airports shut down, ground visibility was poor and
people were forced to seek refuge in their homes
from harmful air and gale force winds. Those that
dared to go out, especially at dawn, were amazed at
the sky's unusual red color, which resembles NASA
images of Mars. Collected here are some photos of
the strongest Australian dust storm in 70
